Pear Sperling Eggan & Daniels, P.C. donates to the Michigan State Bar Association’s and State Bar Foundation’s state-wide Access for Justice Campaign.

For over 20 years, PSED Law has been a leader in providing direct service and financial support to fund pro bono civil legal services to the most vulnerable among us; people who can’t afford but desperately need quality legal representation in Michigan’s civil justice system. 

Thomas Daniels, a partner at PSED Law, is a long-time member of the board of directors of the Michigan Advocacy Program, a 13-county regional legal services program headquartered in Washtenaw County, but with several state-wide legal aid programs. “The Access to Justice Campaign is moving away from local program funding to a state-wide funding model,” says Daniels, “which has resulted in increased funding for legal aid across the state.” Lawyers have an ethical obligation to provide direct service or financial support for pro bono legal aid, and compliance with that obligation by Michigan lawyers and law firms is improving. “It is improving,” says Daniels, “because of the success of the Bar Foundation’s state-wide campaign and by the example set by PSED Law and other firms that have consistently supported pro bono civil legal services and are regularly cited as examples of firms that meet their ethical obligation to do so.” 

Marty Bodnar, another member of the firm, adds that, “PSED Law is proud of our long record of local and state-wide leadership on pro bono legal services.”

More than 2 million people in Michigan qualify for free civil legal aid because their income is below 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. In addition to direct legal representation in court or in other settings, civil legal aid includes online guidance with legal forms and legal self-help centers.
